Single persons guide to temporary accommodation in Newcastle and Gateshead, published by Tyneside Housing Aid Centre, 1998

This guide was published to help single homeless people find accommodation and understand their rights. It gave information on where to look for accommodation, what to ask, and how to deal with problems and harassment.

People who are homeless, unmarried and without children have long struggled to get access to support. The Housing (Homeless Persons) Reduction Act 1977 legally defined homelessness but, unlike families, single people weren’t seen as in need of support. Lots of organisations raised concerns about the experiences and living conditions of single homeless people. The 2017 Homelessness Reduction Act makes it compulsory for councils to assist all homeless people.
